Sitka
Almost every city or town in the United States can trace its formation back to an European immigration or conquest. English, Spanish, French, and German are common heritages, but few can claim Russian roots. However; Sitka is one of these rare exceptions. The Russians first arrived in the area in 1741 with voyages of Vitus Bering and Alexei Chirikof. Their explorations spurred dozens of Russian fur traders to venture into this new frontier. Today, Sitka's 8,000 residents take great pride in their town's colorful history. Although little physical evidence that this was once part of Russia remains, a scattering of artifacts and restored sites recall the bygone era. Located near the center of town is the unique Russian onion done of St. Michael's Cathedral. Destroyed in 1966 by fire, Sitka rebuilt the church after locating 150 year old blue prints.
